People have lived in the area of present-day Tanzania since deep prehistory, and archaeological evidence records early human activity, settlement and exchange. Over later centuries, farming and pastoral communities developed across the mainland, while the coast became part of the Swahili world, whose towns connected East Africa with Arabia, Persia, India and other Indian Ocean regions. Kilwa Kisiwani and other coastal centres prospered through trade in goods such as gold and ivory, although the scale and organisation of this trade changed over time. European expansion altered political control during the nineteenth century. Germany established colonial rule over much of the mainland in the late nineteenth century. After the First World War, Britain administered Tanganyika under a League of Nations mandate and later as a United Nations trust territory. Tanganyika became independent in 1961. Zanzibar gained independence in 1963, followed by a revolution in 1964. Tanganyika and Zanzibar formed the United Republic of Tanzania in April 1964, while Zanzibar retained its own government and political institutions within the union. After independence, Julius Nyerere promoted ujamaa, a policy associated with African socialism, rural cooperation and state-led development. Villagisation reshaped settlement and production, but its effects remain debated because implementation could involve pressure, displacement and economic disruption. Tanzania later introduced multiparty politics and changed its economic policies, while the union continued to shape debates about representation, authority and the division of responsibilities between the Union Government and Zanzibar. Historical explanations depend on the sources used. Archaeological remains help reconstruct periods with few written records. Oral histories preserve community memories, genealogies and accounts of political change, but they must be compared with other evidence because memories can differ. Colonial records often contain detailed information about administration while reflecting colonial priorities and categories. Researchers therefore compare sources and distinguish documented events from later interpretation. The history of Tanzania also requires attention to different experiences on the mainland, in Zanzibar and among the many communities connected through migration, trade, religion and political change.
