Living in Haiti

Haiti lies in the western part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and has around 11.1 million people. The country is predominantly mountainous; between the mountain ranges are valleys, plains, and stretches of coastline. The tropical climate brings warm temperatures, a wetter and a drier season, as well as regional differences: the mountains are cooler, while coastal areas and plains are hotter and can experience heavy rainfall. In Port-au-Prince and other cities, many people live in densely built-up neighborhoods, while in rural areas they more often live in smaller houses near fields. Everyday life combines agriculture, trade, crafts, and services; motorcycles, buses, and “tap-taps” are common. Families, markets, music, and religious festivals shape leisure time, while living conditions and access to essential services vary considerably by region.
